MKE Week 14 – October Sky Movie: Persistence Personified

Well then… Persistence rules!

Mandino says it all in one breath eh? My feelings exactly – you nailed it, OG! No sheep on this adventure!

If you missed your special gift in my post last week… you can still find it here >> The Strangest Secret

Headin’ into the New Year and 14 weeks of the MKMMA Experience now behind me. Wow, too fast!

Going boldly forward in 2016 into the unknown frontier where few men (or women) have been – back to the future to set a new course in the fields of uncertainty – where all opportunity and wisdom lie. And create a new flight plan to meet our future self… or a new blueprint as I’ve been sayin’.

Hey – what else can I say?  It’s uncharted territory the majority of folks will never explore. Unless they join us in September for the next Master Key Experience.[link]

This week has been tremendous fun to visit other blogs and read about their experiences.  I found the holiday season a bit disruptive for my routine, but managed to keep an even keel and not get swamped with all the variables.  Stoked by the growth I’ve experienced!  See other student’s blogs in the sidebar >>

Movies to Validate Persistence

One of the homework projects included watching at least one of these movies which portray a hero’s journey.  The key was to observe the elements which portray those tiny habits of persistence – which once mastered lead you to massive success automatically.

Nicki and I actually watched 5 out of the 6 this week and were amazed at how quickly we resonated the actor’s persistence in their DMP, POA, PMA and MMA following their passions.

I can hear you saying, “What da heck is he talking about.”

Fair enough, ‘cuz if you’re not in the MKMMA with us, you probably have no idea what the letters mean. So here’s a quick spin so you can understand the review.

DMP – Definite Main Purpose

Napoleon Hill introduced the concept of a major definite purpose in his classic Think and Grow Rich. Your definite main purpose represents the main or central mission of your life at this moment. Your life’s work. It attempts to answer the questions “why am I here?” and “what am I going to do with the rest of my life?”

Your definite main purpose is determined a burning desire of what you want your life to look like . No one can choose your desire for you. Once clarified – it becomes your definite chief aim and the primary focus of your mind –  until it becomes your new reality.   Unless, of course,  you allow conflicting desires to stifle it.

PMA – Postitive Mental Attitude

Positive mental attitude is the philosophy of employing an optimistic disposition in all situations to attract positive changes and accelerate achievement.

In the 1937 classic, Think and Grow Rich, Hill outlines the importance of positive thinking. However, he didn’t coin the phrase Positive Mental Attitude until he co-authored Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude, with W. Clement Stone.

They described it as:

“The ‘plus’ characteristics symbolized by such words as faith, integrity, hope, optimism, courage, initiative, generosity, tolerance, tact, kindliness and good common sense.”

When you focus on PMA you automatically uncover and plan ways to win, or find a desirable outcome, regardless of the circumstances. In doing so you eliminate negativity and hopelessness forever and live more harmoniously.

POA – Plan of Action

Take action (however small) towards your definite chief aim every day. This might be as little as writing it down on paper, making a phone call or simply reading an article. Remember the metaphor of the magnifying glass igniting the paper – laser focus.  The compounding effect of small steps taken daily will astound you.  Jeff Olsen outlines the power of compounding time in The Slight Edge.

In MKMMA we develop the skill of self-confidence and the habit of persistence by committing to follow the simple process of complex compounded progression to achieve stunning results.  More on that later…

MMA – Master Mind Alliance

Form an alliance for achieving your Definite Chief Aim – with a person or persons who will help you implement your plans to transform your definite chief aim into reality. The purpose of this friendly alliance is to access the power of the law of the “Master Mind”.

“No two minds ever come together without thereby creating a third, invisible intangible force, which may be likened to a third mind [the master mind].” – Napoleon Hill

MMA

Your alliance should be with those who have your highest and best interests at heart. ie.  Your spouse, mother, father, brothers or sisters, or close friends or business associates.  Simply defined:

A mastermind alliance involves two or more people who work in perfect harmony for the attainment of a definite purpose.

In your mastermind alliance you:

  • May borrow and use the education, experience, influence, and the capital of other people.
  • Can accomplish in one year more than you could accomplish without it in a lifetime.
  • Can readily tap into the power within to access the universal mind.
  • Protect yourself against failure if your purpose is beneficial to all whom it affects.

The Master Key Master Mind Alliance is blessed with hundreds like minded people and it’s easy to choose any number to form a smaller mastermind within the large group. Imagine the potential when you’ve hundreds available to choose as mastermind partners!

October Sky – A Short Review

This was a fun task to include as “homework” over the holiday season.  Without giving away too much of the story, I’ll give you a short snapshot of how I related to this movie.

In general – I loved the characters portrayed by the actors and was in tune with the emotional tone of the values they communicated throughout the entire movie. Credible characters – well cast roles.

October Sky is based on Homer Hickam’s Rocket Boys, a true memoir.  The real life hero of this story actually does end up working with Astronauts so it’s easy to see the authenticity of the movie story.

Homer (the star) was focused on getting an autographed photo of Werner von Braun which I identified with immediately because Bob Proctor often quotes von Braun in his conversations about the Universal Laws:

The natural laws of the universe are so precise that we have no difficulty building a spaceship to the moon and can time the flight with the precision of a fraction of a second.

It’s a great link to the material we are studying with MKMMA.

After viewing Sputnik orbiting the earth, Homer, an avid science fiction reader has a burning desire to become part of the solution for space travel. (DMP).  His first in a series of stumbling blocks is math and science, his weak subjects in school. So, he knows he can’t go this alone and needs set up an alliance with others to leverage their skills. (MMA)

He connects with the geeky outcast class brainiac, Quentin, and recruits him as a partner (MMA) to help him follow his destiny. As the discuss their plan of action (POA) they ask two more lads to join them in their adventure.

The first attempts to launch his rockets end in minor disaster – like blowing a fence down. This get them on the wrong side of his dad and the miners who think Homer should be in the mine and get his head out of the clouds. The dialogue and drama it builds keeps the story moving quickly and adds to the entertainment value immensely.

The boys garner more support (POA) for their project and Homer’s (MMA) expands to insure his eventual success. The inspiration he receives from his teacher is motivational, emotional and well choreographed to add a heart warming touch to the story.

The (PMA) Homer maintains through the story is a picture of strength and his leadership develops throughout the story.

I purposely didn’t detail the total story line because if you haven’t seen this movie, I didn’t want to give away all the goodies in a couple of paragraphs. Well, boys and girls, end of the storytelling for now.

It’s New Year’s eve tonight and I wanted to get this posted.

Make it a fantastic 2016!

’til next time,

PS:  What did you think about John, Homer’s dad, played by Chris Cooper?

Dennis Goff
  1. Dominica – thank you! You’re right. It’s exactly the reason I included the content – to give a quick peek for anyone not yet in the MKMMA Experience. The Mandino training and life philosophy must be showing through. Would have loved to have met Og in person.

  2. Hi Day – great to meet you! Thanks for dropping by today. I appreciate your comments. Best of the New Year to you too! Cheers!

  3. I thought the point where Homer tells his dad that Von Braun was not his hero was surprising after all the bickering and belittling he had received from his father turned the whole story. I saw the similarities and expected to see no resolution, that was how I feel the father set the example.
The hand on the shoulder came across as too Hollywood.

  4. I think it was hard for Homer’s dad to let go of the fact that Homer did not want to be a coal miner like himself. His dad was “stuck” being a coal miner with no way to get out. He came a long way but he has a long way to go. He needs to go on the journey with us at MMA. I know I have a long journey ahead of me also. It is a challenge every day and I am loving it!

  5. Barbara, thanks for adding value to this post with your comments! You’re right about the challenging adventures with MKMMA. Glad to hear you’re enjoying it. Me too! Maybe just the ticket for Homer’s dad.

  6. Hey Wayne – thank you for your perspective on the storyline. Yeah – the turnaround in the dad’s attitude surprised me too. He did come across as inflexible in his attitude about having to continue the generational progression of mine workers. I’m a sap for happy endings so was glad to see the harmony in the family at the end. Cheers!

  7. Very nicely done Dennis! You have provided both a really succinct trailer for the MKMMA Experience and a nice assessment of the movie. You do a marvelous job of linking to other sources. And I really like the way you combined your shapes and colours with the four tiny habits. You are putting it all together!

  8. Thank you Terry! I can’t do it alone and I am extremely grateful for masterminding with you on a regular basis. Love the power of the Master Mind!

  9. What a wonderful review Denis! I love your insights leading up to the review. I have only been able to watch Wild and Rudy over the break and plan at some point to watch them all. Cool Runnings I have seen a couple of times. Rudy was even more of a tear jerker than Wild. Thanks.
Off I go to read Terry’s review.

  10. Hi Danny – great to meet you here! I appreciate your comments. The list of movies were well selected to show the 4 habits leading to persistence. Cheers!

  11. What a great summary of MKMMA habits of persistence and the movie. Thanks for that. We have not found the movie yet, but will. Have a great new year.

  12. Thank you Barbara! Glad you enjoyed the post this week. Have fun with the movies and make it a fantastic year in 2016!

  13. Thanks for sharing Dennis…I l am loving the master key experience more and more. Like the tie in with the October Sky. Mahalo

  14. You’re welcome, Robert. Wanted to give folks outside this MKMMA Experience a quick glimpse behind the curtain to see how simple and complex progressions compound over time to significantly change our results in life. These movies were great examples of how anyone with a definite chief aim, plan of action and positive mental attitude can leverage the power of the “master mind” to achieve whatever they desire in life. We’re only half-way thru the course and I am already astounded at the changes I see.

This Master Key Master Mind Alliance is the best vehicle I have found (after years of searching) to uncover our unlimited personal power and show us precisely how to use it, step by step. So far it’s been an emotional, mind expanding adventure – the best one of my life! Happy to share it with you…

  15. You’re welcome, Don. Thanks for your comments! Happy to see you here and glad you enjoyed my post. Let me know if I can help you with anything on this fun adventure…

  16. Rocket boys was a fantastic story and epitomized persistence for me. Homer’s dad was typical of the father figures where I grew up in a mill town and, though I’m sure he had the best of intentions in trying to steer home into the mine, missed the boat on how supporting your children’s dreams is extremely important no matter what they might be.

Rudy is just flat out one of the most powerful stories I’ve ever had the pleasure of crying over. The steadfast self belief and persistence in Rudy and the turn around in his father and brother we’re absolutely moving.

  17. Thanks for reading and adding value to this post, Kurt. Nicki and I both loved this movie! Haven’t got to Rudy yet… next on the list. Know what you mean about having the Kleenex box handy ‘cuz big boys do cry and I keep the box handy when I’m watching “values” movies like these. Hey – thanks for adding your website link – love the photos on your site. Cheers!

  18. Didn’t watch the movie, but now I’m really looking forward to it. Great summary of what the MKMMA experience is all about. And would you believe, last night I spent a portion of my time on the computer reading what people from previous years had to say about their experience with the master key? Too funny.

  19. Homer’s Dad is portrayed as a narrow minded hard ass. Only at the end is there an indication that his attitude toward Homer’s dream is based on his deep seated belief that what he wants for Homer is in Homer’s best interests. This is undoubtedly the case of course. All parents want the best for their kids.

It took until about half way through for the movie to really get my attention. I thought the portrayal of Homer’s dream as a youngster and the trials and tribulations he had to fight through up to that point were not skillfully presented. But I am comparing this one to Rudy which was enthralling right from the get go.

  20. Latasha, I’ll bet you enjoy the movie. Thank you for reading this and your comments. I’ll be visiting your blog to read your latest posts soon.

  21. Terry, funny thing is I know a guy exactly like Homer’s dad so I identified immediately. I’ve added Rudy to my list to watch as soon as I locate it. Many thanks for adding value to this post with your comments. I appreciate you!

  22. Well Leigh, many thanks for reading and commenting. I imagine an amazing 2016 so it’s better than that – I’m stoked! Best of the new year to you too!
